Required Minimum Auto Insurance Coverage - 25/50/10. The minimum liability coverage limits as mandated by Indiana Auto Insurance law if you register and operate a motor vehicle in the state is $25,000 for injury liability for one person in an accident, $50,000 for all injuries in a single accident, and $10,000 for property damage. Since these figures are only minimum limits, especially if you own assets, it is considered prudent to obtain higher liability limits in case you are sued for liability as a result form an auto accident.
Mandatory Insurance Coverage - You are required to maintain a Property Damage Liability policy and Bodily Injury Liability policy
Optional Coverage - Indiana auto insurance companies will offers optional coverage: medical payments, collision, comprehensive, and Uninsured Motorists and Underinsured Motorists coverage.
You should consider purchasing any or all of these optional coverage policies, especially Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist coverage. These policies help cover the cost of your injuries and property damage should you be in an accident with a driver with inadequate liability insurance.
Proof of Insurance - There is conflicting word on whether Indiana auto insurance law requires that you carry proof of acceptable insurance policies in your vehicle(s) at all times. Therefore, it is recommended and considered prudent to do so in the event you are pulled over by law enforcement and asked to produce a valid insurance card.
Penalty for Failure to Comply - The penalty for noncompliance in Indiana is relatively lenient, a 90 day license suspension, $150 reinstatement fee. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you purchase Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist policies.
If it is a repeat offense within a three-year period, the driver will incur a one (1) year license suspension. To have your license reinstated you must pay a reinstatement fee of $150, $225, or $300 depending on whether it is a first, second, third or subsequent offense, and prove that you have purchased a valid automobile liability policy.
Important Note - you must keep your address current with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles: BMV sends requests for proof of insurance to thousands of drivers each year. You are required to notify the Bureau of Motor Vehicles if you move and change your address.
Non-Seatbelt Use
In Indiana, you can be pulled over for noncompliance with the seatbelt law. The penalty is a $25 fine for any seat in the front seat not in compliance.
Lawsuits—Since Indiana is based on a standard Tort liability system, there are no restrictions on lawsuits for as a result of an accident
